Southwold Town Council have successfully completed the Town Trail project, as part of a grant from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) in association with the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) under their Growth programme.
The Town Trail includes:
4 wooden sculptures including; A Marsh Harrier, often seen near Southwold Town Marshes and Common. A Sanderling (or Sandpiper) a small local shorebird. A model Yacht, synonymous with Southwold’s Model Yacht regattas, and a salt pot, depicting the salt works, an industrious trade in Southwold from at least 1660 to the late 1700’s. Other installations as part of the grant include 6 sky watching seats. The sculptures and seats were produced by wood carver, Luke Chapman, based near Aylsham, Norwich. The timbers used for the carvings came from a locally sourced Nelson Oak tree (named after Admiral Lord Nelson) and a Wellingtonia Tree (Giant Redwood) recently struck by lightning which required felling, both sustainably sourced from a private Estate in Norfolk.
14 Town Trail signs and 5 tri-bracket signs depicting the heritage of Southwold. The signs were supplied by Nature Sign Design.
