New Bird Viewing Platform, Southwold Marshes & Common. Southwold Town Council and the Southwold Common Trust Charity have recently completed a project funded through the Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Sustainable Development Fund.
This (third) grant has enabled delivery and installation of a new bird viewing platform adjacent to the affectionately named ‘Splash’. The area is a legacy of the 1953 floods, stretching across 5.6 hectares and recognised as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), supporting
breeding waders and wildfowl including lapwing, redshank, avocet shoveler and gadwall.
Project outputs include improved access, safety and biodiversity optimisation in conjunction with educational and recreational use, as well as continued green space volunteer maintenance.
